Madonna tried to take a new turn in her musical carreer with a new record. It was promotes as a more romantic project, with some R&B arrangements and a complete new sound. The first single of this new era was Secret. Some may say it was one of her best songs, some others think it was a weak single. It was really weak, at least in the charts, where it couldn't reach #1 (although it's one of Madonna's songs which has been longer in the top positions): The first contact Madonna has with this song was a former composition by Shep Pettibone, who made a quite diferent version from the final track included in Bedtime Stories, which has a R&B touch made by Dallas Austin. The song is about a love story, in which one lover has a secret to share with the other, and that makes all change. When the single was released, everybody said the rumour that Madonna was pregnant, and that was the 'secret'. In some interviews, Madonna has never told us what the secret was. Instead of that, she wanted to give the song another sense, a spiritual and religious sense: 'happines lies in your own hands', a sentence from the song, is extracted from The Book Of The Dead of The Lamas. | | videoclip |

| This is not one of the best Madonna videos, we all know that. Filmed in black and white by an unknown Melodie McDaniel (more known as a photographer) in Harlem, New York. Madonna is an heroine adicted singer in a night club. She wants to break all the stereotypes of the actual society, and we can see black people, white people, men, women, transvestites, kids, old people, pretty and ugly people,
Madonna is very sexy, wearing a Wonderbra, which was really fashionable at that time. We can see that her secret is to raise a family, in fact, at the end of the video she joins her boyfriend, a black guy, and their son. Madonna recreated the R&B athmosphere in that night club, singing with a Jazz band. There are plenty of religious icons in the video, as the crosses hanging in the walls, or even when her character is baptised, something that was said to be a spiritual cleaning from her previous 'Erotica' and sex years. There is another version of this video Dan-O-Rama made with the Junior's Luscious Single Mix. It has the same images, but with a different edition, and adapted to the rhythm of the remix. Although Madonna has some video remixes, this one made for Secret was heavily aired in the music tv channels. | | | madonna's secret | Reading the lyrics of the song, some rumours raised about her real secret, but she never confirmed anything. What is more, she tried to give the song a religious and spiritual meaning. Since the song was released, many said that she could have been pregnant. Madonna had some more weight at that time, and that was addes to the rumour. The truth is that no baby would come until a couple of years later. Maybe it was just a rumour or maybe she aborted (many of her biographies say that). But once again, is Madonna herself who has to speak and tell the truth, and we all know how she is. | | collector items | | | The single for Secret was released in Cd single, 7" and 12 " vinyl, and casette. But Madonna wanted a change from the Erotica image and sound, and didn't want to work anymore with Shep. This version is almost another song, with great differences in the sound and lyrics (it is said to be a dance track, not a R&B tune). Although Shep was co-writer of the song, he doesn't appear in the credist, and hasn't seen a penny from the single benefits. He only got a mention in the album acknowledgements: thank you for being understanding.
| | cover | This is not one of the best covers of her singles, we may think. The picture is taken by Patrick Demarchelier, and Practick Li was the designer. | | in the chart | | Secret didn't have a warm welcome in the charts, as it could have been expected for a first single from a new album, and a promotional campaign showing Madonna as a new woman far away from the sex scandals. In ths States just reached #3, although it reached #1 in the dance charts. In Japan it got a #2, but it only became nunber one in one country, Canada, and for several weeks. | | official versions | 1. Album Version / Lp Version (5:03) 2. Video Version (4:34) 3. It was a sligthly diferent version, more acustic, and Madonna played the guitar as some images of many religions were shown in the back.
On February 18th 1995 she sang it along with Take A Bow in the german show 'Wetten Dass', but made an horrible playback in both of them.
