ASCAP. | | coments | The second single from "Erotica" made Madonna return to the dance floors, which she had already conquered with "Vogue", a couple of years earlier. In fact, "Deeper And Deeper" is the most dance style song we can find in her "Erotica" album, and it became a huge dancefloor hit in spring 1993. It is said to be a song in Madonna's career as important as "I Will Survive" was in the Gloria Gaynor career. It is one of the favourites song of many of the gay fans Madonna have.
Many people say that this song is a mixture between "Express Yourself" and "Vogue", even "Deeper And Deeper" includes some "Vogue" lyrics at the end of it: "You've got to just let your body move to the music; You've got to just let your body go with the flow". In the "Erotica" diaries, we can read how Madonna made Shep include the latin interlude with the spanish guitar, a thing that Shep didn't want to do.
There were two things that made "Deeper And Deeper" not to have all the success it deserved: first, the bad image Madonna gave the public with all the "Sex" book and scandal; and second, the really bad video that was made for this great song.
When they released the maxi-single, more than ten different remixes were made between Shep Pettibone (not including now any of the latin things appearing in his album version) and David Morales, the only one time he had worked for Madonna, even he is a really famous Dj's in the world. | | videoclip | 
 | It may be one of the least attractive videos Madonna has ever made. The video uses black and white images with some colour ones, and it was directed by Bobby Woods. Madonna wants to express the lost of innocence with this video. She goes back to the seventies, and plays the character of a woman who joins her friends in a disco, where she dances and walks around until she finds her boyfriend, played by Udo Kier (who had already appeared in her "Erotica" video). He seems to have a big influence on the character Madonna plays, and they celebrates strange parties.
The video is a littie bit weird, as well as the characters appearing in it. Madonna's look is great, but is not enough to save the video. Many Madonna's real friends appear on it with small cameos, as: Chi Chi LaRue, Debi Mazar, Sofia Coppola, the rock group Pariah, Holly Woodlanw, Ingrid Casares,.. and even Maverick and Sire Records managers as Guy Oseary and Seymour Stein.
This video has never been commercially released, as it wasn't included in the second video compilation of Madonna. There are two versions of it, one with the album version, and another one with the radio edit.
This video is one of the weakest things of this single, because the song itself was great and it had really good remixes. But the video didn't catch the attention of her public, and was really boring. |

| | cover |  The image of the cover, with the golden tooth and the cigar, is from a photo session made by Wayne Maser. This pictures appeared in many magazine covers at that time. The design is by Greg Ross. | | in the charts | | "Deeper And Deeper" was a single that had a worst position that was expected to have. The dark shadows of the "Sex" book and all the "Erotica" scandals made it. And finally, the bad video made for the single helped that fact. It reached #7 in the "US Hot Play", but the great remixes of the song made it reach number one in the dance charts. It reached #6 in the UK and #3 in Japan. She used "Deeper And Deeper" as the second song in that section, following the idea and the look of the video, but, with a much much better result, a beautiful performance. At the end of the song, all the dancers end with a big orgy. This is the only time she has performed "Deeper And Deeper" live.
