coments
The 5th track from the Like a Virgin album is a song written in 1978 by Miles Gregory. It is the best song from that album, if we consider the musical point of view. Producer Nile Rodgers seemed to understand the real nature of this song, and gave it some orchestral arrangements, with a wide string sections (directed by himself), which made it completely diferent to the other (sintetized) songs from Like a Virgin. The way Madonna sings is excellent, with a great control of her breathing, showing all her critics she could sing. In 1984 it was released a a single, but only for Japan. In 1995 was included in Madonna's greatest ballads album Something to Remember, being remixed especially for this reason.
Strange as it seems, it was released as the 5th and last single from that album, and had one of Madonna's simplest videos. Some dance remixes were made, and were released as promos, but didn't reached the commercial release, the same as the I want you remixes. This song is a classic that has also been sung by other artists as Jimmy Nail (Magaldi in Evita), Faith Evans or Rose Royce.

Love Don't Live Here Anymore Video

The video was filmed during the first week of february, 1996, in a baker shop in Buenos Aires, Argentina (in the neighbourhood El Congreso, also called El Molino). The building is from the early 20th century, and was closed from many years earlier. It was one of the most typical places of that city. It was filmed in just one day, in one of the breaks for the film Evita. Madonna didn't want to record the video for several reasons: she was so into the Eva Duarte role she couldn't remember the song's lyrics, and she had to record it on her day off. Her manager, Freddy DeMann convinced her when he gave her a chocolate box as a present (as she says in the Evita diaries Madonna published in Vanity Fair).
The director was an old Madonna collaborator, Jean-Baptiste Mondino, who had worked with her directing classics such as Open Your Heart, Justify My Love, Human Nature and Don't Tell Me.
The first location to be considered for the filming of the video wasn't that bakery. It was the Sans Soucie Palace (in a village called Victoria, 30 km. away from Buenos Aires), in which the scenes where Peron carries Eva when she already has cancer were filmed.
The video has only one take in which the camera gets closer to Madonna very slowly, and then it goes away, while she is singing around one column. Madonna had to repeat the take five times, because she started to laugh, and she didn't remember the lyrics. At the end, the editors didn't even use the final one, they had to edit the others to have a good lip-synch. Madonna is dressed in a Gucci creation which color (black) made her figure more thin, hidding the second moth of pregnancy of her daughter Lourdes.

lyric
Love Don't Live Here Anymore
You abandoned me
Love don't live here anymore
Just a vacancy
Love don't live here anymore

When you lived inside of me
There was nothing I could conceive
That you wouldn't do for me
Trouble seemed so far away
You changed that right away, baby

You abandoned me
Love don't live here anymore
Just a vacancy
Love don't live here anymore

Love don't live here anymore
Just emptiness and memories
Of what we had before
You went away
Found another place to stay, another home

You abandoned me
Love don't live here anymore
Just a vacancy
Love don't live here anymore

In the windmills of my eyes
Everyone can see the loneliness inside me
Why'd ya have to go away
Don't you know I miss you so and need your love

You abandoned me
Love don't live here anymore
Just a vacancy
Love don't live here anymore

the madonna's sad

Love Don't Live Here AnymoreIt may seem strange that Madonna chose this song (an 1978 song) as her last single in 1996. Madonna wanted to express and reflect the horrible welcome she had in Argentina by the press and some social-politic circles. And the best way to tell them what she felt was: love don't live here anymore. It is also said that the main reason for such a boring video (we don't think the same) is to give a reply to all those MTV critics at the strong content of some of her videos.

in the chart
It was edited in 1984 as a single just in Japan, reaching number 4 in the charts. Then, in 1996, it was released again, but it wasn't successful at all, reaching 78 in USA and 31 in Canada . If the consider the video, and the final Warner decision for not releasing the remixes, we can say it's one of the weakest singles from Madonna's musical carreer.
