coments

Those who thought that Madonna had nothing new to add to the music industry after 17 years of singing, were really wrong. "Music" shows that Madonna is creating new music every time, and has the latest influences on it. With this new album, Madonna still uses techno, but her sound gets a new electronic sound, even more the "Ray Of Light" album. French musician and producer Mirwais Ahmadzaï, although a little bit unknown for the public, is the best producer using the electronic sound in Europe.
All Madonna fans could hear an extract from the song in the early may, 2000, because of a leaked demo that were all around the internet. Although the song was scheduled for july, it was delayed until august 22nd. It was then when we all could buy and hear the new single. This time she used a country look that were about to be shown in every "Music" single, the album, and two videos.
"Music" had a great collection of remixes, with an excellent quality: Groove Armada, Hex Hector, Deep Dish, Victor Calderone, Robbie Rivera, Richard 'Humpty' Vission and Dave Aude.
A great and strong promotion, the good remixes, and the catchy song made "Music" a number one all over the world, just a few countries didn't have Madonna in their top positions. This song has also became another Madonna classic.
"Music" is (as its title says) an ode to music. The song is full of electronic sounds, and even the beginning intro (Hey Mr. Dj...) is Madonna herself with a distortion in her voice.

videoclip

The video for the single "Music" was directed by swedish Jonas Akerlund, who had already worked with Madonna in her "Ray Of Light" video. The video was filmed in may 2000, in Los Angeles. The reason for filming the video so quickly was that Madonna was in her fifth month of pregnancy, for her forthcoming son, Rocco. In fact, Madonna always wears a white fur, just to disimulate her growing belly. Arianne Phillips is her stylist in this video again. The jewels she wears belongs to a "Versace" collection. It can be said to be a really bad video for a first single of an album.
Madonna goes out with two friends, Niki Harris (background vocals in most Madonna songs since the mid 80's) and Debi Mazar (who has also appeared in other Madonna videos as "True Blue", "Papa Don't Preach", "Deeper And Deeper"...). There is also another great cameo: Ali G, a famous british comediant plays the driver of the limousine in the video (owned by Puff Daddy).
In this video, Madonna takes a ride through L.A. in the limousine, goes to a disco, then to a stripper's club,... Madonna wanted to make some kind of parody of the "Hip Hop" world, which is usually restricted to men. The video has an animated scene in which Madonna destroys neon lights with the titles of some of her old songs. Probably Madonna wanted to say she was a little bit tired of her past hits, as she has said in many interviews.
The video for "Music" was released in DVD, being the first DVD single release ever. It has two versions, a long and a short one. "MTV" thought that the images of the strippers were too explicit, and censored some of them. There is also another version of the video (with the Hex Hector remix) including scenes of other Madonna videos, along with "Music".
And finally, we have the "Dan-O-Rama" montages used in all the "Music" performances. They are basically a compilation of the best Madonna moments in her videos, films and performances, as some kind of tribute to her career. They made a different montage for every performance: the promotional concerts of "Roseland" and "Brixton", the "MTV European Awards" performance, the "Grammy Awards" performance of "What It Feels Like For A Girl", and the "Drowned World Tour".

collector items
It is very hard to say all the different editions of the Music single, as every country released it with a different tracklisting, depending of the world area. Basically, we can say there are three main zones: USA, Europe, and Australasia. In USA it had Cyberraga as its B-side (the unreleased song included in the Australasian version of the Music album). In Europe, the B-side was one of the remixes, normally the Groove Armada or the Hex Hector edit versions.
The 12" maxis were released with lost of promotional stickers, and some without even a cover. The official 12" maxi released in the US had 6 remixes. The two european releases had 8 remixes in total.
In the UK there were two CD-singles. The first has the same cover as the single release, with: album version, Groove Armada's 7'' Edit, Calderone Radio Edit and Deep Dish Dot Com Radio Edit. Part two has a different cover, and: Album Verison, Groove Armada Mix and Deep Dish Dot Com US Edit.
The US maxi single had 9 remixes of the song. It was released in ecopack with different colours in the plastic (black and white). The cd has: HQ2 Club Mix, Calderone Anthem Mix, Deep Dish Dot Com Remix, Groove Armada Club Mix, Young Collective Club Mix, HQ2 Radio Mix, Calderone Radio Edit, Deep Dish Dot Com Radio Edit and Groove Armada 12" Mix.
The japanese maxi has the same tracklisting as the USA release, but it comes in a normal CD box, and with the typical japanese letters.
In Australia and Singapur there were two cd-maxi. Number one had: Deep Dish Dot Com Remix & UK Radio Mix, Groove Armada 7" Edit, GA 12" Mix, Bonus Beats and Club Mix. It came with some multimedia content: the Music video and an scrennsaver. CD two has the other cover, and it contained: Album Version, Calderone Radio Edit, HQ2 7" Mix, The Young Collective Radio Mix, Calderone Anthem Mix, HQ2 Club Mix and The Young Collective Club Mix.
Promo edition released and distributed to some US Dj's. It is a 12" vinyl with the Richard 'Humpty' Vission remixes never released: Phunkytron Mix and Phunkytron Dub. Not many copies of this record were made.
Jukebox especial edition in 7" vinyl, released in USA. Some editions don't have a cover. The covers are different from the commercial releases. The B-side is Cyberraga. It is a very hard to find item, and it was also released in Italy as a pormo, with the cover in the picture.
_
Cassetes single. The first of them is the UK release: Album Versión and Groove Armada 7'' Edit. The second one is the US edition, with Cyberraga as the B-side.
Music has been the first ever DVD single release, and it was very well accepted. It has two versions of the video, a short and an extended one. It was just released in videotape as a promo for the TV channels. There is also a NTSC format videotape, released in the US, with one of the Dan-O-Rama montages.
The DVD from Taiwan has a different back cover, but the same content.
Z100 radio station distributed some CD-ROM's with the first Dan-O-Rama montage made for the single. It is really official and hard to find.
12" picture disc, European release, with: Deep Dish Dot Com Remix, Groove Armada Club Mix, Groove Armada GA 12 Mix and Album Version.
Promo european 12'' Maxi-single, containing: Groove Armada Club Mix, Calderone Anthem Mix, Deep Dish Dot Com Remix and Album Version.
Promotional USA 12'' Maxi-single, containing: Calderone Anthem Mix, The Young Collective Club Mix, Groove Armada's Flagship Dub, Calderone Radio Edit, Groove Armada's 12" Revival, Groove Armada's 7" Edit and Groove Armada Bonus Beats. There is another one with the same sticker (in pink), with: HQ2 Club Mix, HQ2 Radio Mix, Deep Dish Dot Com Remix and Deep Dish Dot Com Radio Edit.
Rare japanese promo CD, with the Album Version.
Another strange promo edition released in France and made in Germany, with just the Album Versión.

Music Remix is another japanese promo CD 5'' with: Groove Armada Remix Edit, HQ2 Remix Main 7'', Victor Calderone Radio Edit, The Young Collective Radio Mix, Deep Ddish Remix Radio Edit and Album Version.

This list of collectibles is not complete, it's just an orientative guide of the most important things.
lyric
Music
Hey Mr. DJ
Put a record on
I wanna dance with my baby

[Do you like to boogie-woogie]
[Do you like to boogie-woogie]
[Do you like to boogie-woogie]
[Do you like my acid rock]

Hey Mr. DJ
Put a record on
I wanna dance with my baby
And when the music starts
I never wanna stop
It's gonna drive me crazy

[Music - music - music - music...]

Music makes the people
Come together
Music makes the bourgeoisie and the rebel

Don't think of yesterday
And I don't look at the clock
I like to boogie-woogie
It's like riding on the wind
And it never goes away
Touches everything I'm in
Got to have it everyday

Music makes the people
Come together
Music makes the bourgeoisie and the rebel

Hey Mr. Dj

[Do you like to boogie-woogie]
[Do you like to boogie-woogie]
[Do you like to boogie-woogie]
[Do you like my acid rock]

Hey Mr. DJ
Put a record on
I wanna dance with my baby
And when the music starts
I never wanna stop
It's gonna drive me crazy

Music makes the people
Come together
Music makes the bourgeoisie and the rebel

[Do you like to boogie-woogie]
[Do you like to boogie-woogie]
[Do you like to boogie-woogie]
[Do you like my acid rock]

internet

Madonna is one of the artists with more presence through the internet . This fact is as good as bas, because internet is the perfect media for copying music and videos illegally. It had happened with "Frozen", that appeared in the internet several days before it was officially released. But "Music" has a much different behaviour: the single released was expected on july, and the single was already in the web (by the end of may). But the worse was about to come when the full "Music" album was available through the internet with the help of software like "Napster". All this led to a great polemic about the use of internet for copying music.

cover
Madonna trusts again Jean Baptiste Mondino for the photo sessions made for the album and the single. She chose Kevin Reagan again for designing the artwork, which repeated constantly all over the "Music" album and singles. Some fans were really fed up with it.
in the charts
"Music" was a great hit and a number one all over the world. It reached #1 in: USA, UK, Spain, Canada, Japan, Mexico, Italy, … In most of them repeated that position for more than one week, as in the US, were it was there for 4 weeks. The single has sold more then 3.500.000 copies worldwide.

bootleg versions

When promoting "Music", "Warner" made a web in which some extracts of the songs were given to let you make your own remix of it. So you could create your own version, as if you were a Dj. What is more, another web page (acidplanet.com) made a contest of the best remixed made with the acapella versions of "Deeper And Deeper", "Ray Of Light" and "Music". All that was enough material for amateur remixers to make a huge amount of versions of the song. Hundred of remixes were made, and lots of them are as good as the official ones.

awards

"Music" has earned lots of awards between 2000 and 2001:

- "Billboard Awards 2000", best video of the year
- "MTV Europe Music Awards 2000", best dance song
- "Danish Music Awards 2001", best international hit in Denmark
- "International Dance Music Awards 2001", best dance video and best 12'' maxi single.

live

Madonna promoted the "Music" single with a lot of live performances. In all of them Madonna sang it live, with Donna and Niki, her two backgorund vocal girls. She also used a big screen with the "Dan-O-Rama" montages showing images of all her career.

Madonna gave two promotional concerts for the "Music" album. The first of them was in New York, in the "Roseland Ballroom", on November 5th 2000.

Madonna went to Europe and performed "Music" in the "MTV European Video Music Awards", which were held in Sweden on November 2000. She also got two awards.

On November 24th 2000, Madonna went to France and performed "Music" and "Don't Tell Me" in the french TV show "Nulle Part Ailleurs", with Mirwais.

The performance she gave in "Top Of The Pops", in UK, on November 25th 2000, was the only one who wasn't live.

The second promotional concert was given in London, in the "Brixton Academy", on November 28th 2000. It was live broadcasted through the internet.

Although she only got an award for the design of the "Music" album artwork, she performed "Music" in the "Grammy Awards" on February 24th 2001 in the US. This was the first time we could see images of the "What It Feels Like For A Girl" video.

"Music" was another song included in her "Drowned World Tour", the last song of the great show.

After two years, in the "American Life" album promotion, Madonna performed "Music" in a german special tv show called "Absolut Madonna", in May 3rd 2003.

Although it was recorded in May, the special french television show called the "Chanson Nº1" didn't broadcasted until the June 8th. The show was a review to Madonna's musical career, ten well-known french singers performed famous Madonna's songs. She sang, making lipsynch, three songs, one of them was "Music".
