Madonna had finished her world tour The Girlie Show, and began to record the first demos for her next album. She began working with Shep Pettibone, the producer of her last album Erotica, and recorded demos called I'd Rather Be Your Lover, I Will Always Have You (a later Inside Me) and Something's Coming Over Me (a later Secret). Madonna then decided to change the sound of her album, not working with Shep. We don't know the reasons for that decision, but it may be due to the horrible results of her Erotica album, produced by Shep. We can't hear the Something's Coming Over demo yet. It can be heard at the Library Of Congress in Washington DC, where all the material is kept with the copyright. Bruce Baron, who has published some interesting reports about Madonna's unreleased songs, have been one of the lucky ones who have heard the song. He says that it is completely diferent from the Secret production made by Dave Hall. This demo is more powerful, more like a dance song. The album version is boring compared to this demo, and there are also some slight differences in the lyrics (the sentence 'my baby's got a secret' doesn't appear in the demo). Madonna wanted a R&B sound in her record, and she joined Dave Hall. She changed the song title for Secret. And we can't find Shep Pettibone anywhere in the credits of the song, although he was one of the co-writers. There is only a sentence saying: Thank you for being understanding. After that, Shep quited the music production and worked in a hotel. He has recently composed and produced again. Bruce Baron says that this demo has a perfect sound, and that it could be perfectly published. Maybe some day we can enjoy it, but Madonna herself says this will happen when she is no longer alive. | | |
