coments
The first song from the first album. It was Madonna's first top five in the american charts (#4 in August, 1984) and the fifth and last single from that album. This is a love song written by Madonna, and its chorus reminds us of any lullaby, in which she tells us about her boyfriend, her "Lucky Star". This song has the characteristic sound of Reggie Lucas, begining with some high-low keyboard sounds before the main rythm appears. Madonna changes her voice from the deepest sounds, to many double register higher notes. The result is an hypnotic and catchy first song for an album. "Lucky Star" was one of the songs selected for Madonna's first greatest hits album, "The Immaculate Collection", being remastered and remixed by Shep Pettibone to make it sound as perfect as the first day. More recently, Guy Ritchie, Madonna's husband, included the tune in the soundtrack of his film "Snatch".
videoclip

This is the video that made Madonna's belly button famous. Images of her hips and belly moving around were seen almost everywhere. The video is really simple, with a white background to focus on Madonna's movements, dressed in black, and with two sancers. The dancers are the ones appearing in other performances: her brother Christopher and Erica Bell. It was filmed in L.A. by Arthur Pierson and produced by Glenn Goodwin. The artictic director was Madonna herself.
There are two versions of this video: One of them is from the edited 3:55 version of the song (the one appearing in "The Immaculate Collection"), and the other one is from the "U.S. Remix Edit" (5:04, appearing in the Madonna EP video).

live

As this is one of Madonna's first songs, it's hard to know how many times she sang "Lucky Star" live. It was included in her fisrt tour, "The Virgin Tour" (covering 27 american cities) and in her second one, "Who's That Girl Tour".

..

the supposed cover of the first album

The first Madonna album was going to be called "Lucky Star", or that's what people from the "Hard Rock Café" say. They say they have the one and only copy of the record made with this design. For some unknown reasons "Sire Records" decided to change it,and choose the one we all know, maybe because it was more similar to the image Madonna had at that moment. The cover is shown in the right, and the back cover shows Madonna from one side with a big white circle in the background.

lyric
Lucky Star
You must be my Lucky Star
'Cause you shine on me wherever you are
I just think of you and I start to glow
And I need your light
And baby you know

Starlight, starbright
First star I see tonight
Starlight, [starbright]
Make everything all right
Starlight, starbright
First star I see tonight
Starlight, [starbright] yeah

You must be my Lucky Star
'Cause you make the darkness seem so far
And when I'm lost you'll be my guide
I just turn around and you're by my side

Starlight, starbright
First star I see tonight
Starlight, [starbright]
Make everything all right
Starlight, starbright
First star I see tonight
Starlight, [starbright] yeah

Come on shine your heavenly body tonight
'Cause I know you're gonna make everything all right
You may be my lucky star
But I'm the luckiest by far

Starlight, starbright
First star I see tonight
Starlight, [starbright]
Make everything all right

belly button
"Lucky Star" video made Madonna famous for her belly button, which appears several times in that video. She even says that her belly is the most sensible part of her body, and she thinks it's perfect. In 1994 she made a piercing on it, but she regreted, because it made her feel dizzy.
cover
This is the cover of the Cd single that can be found in shops, which is the same as the 12" vinyl for U.K. The photo by George Holy shows Madonna in an old television.
in the chart
When "Lucky Star" was released as a single, it didn't have such a success. In fact, the only country in which it reached a high position (#2) was Japan. But when Madonna became more and more famous, her popularity could be seen in her sales. In August 1984 "Lucky Star" reached #4 in U.S.A., becoming her fist top 5. It was released in Europe in september 1983, and it didn't appear in the charts, until its reedition in march 1984, which made it reach a number 2. Due to the never ending success of "Lucky Star" and "Borderline", "Sire Records" was forced to delay the release of Madonna second album, "Like A Virgin", and released again her album (called "Madonna") with a diferent cover and diferent name, "The First Album".
The single has sold more then 750.000 copies worldwide.
erica bell
Erica Bell was one of Madonna's first friends from the early New York years. They had an intense friendship, and she was one of the first persons Madonna really trusted. She danced several times with Madonna, appearing in two of her videos: "Everybody" and "Lucky Star". Erica says that she is the responsible for the look Madonna has in the "Lucky Star" video, and she even did herself all the costumes. Maripol, the designer that dressed Madonna in her first years, says it was him. Who is telling the truth?
