coments

Swept Away, is griten and directed by Guy Ritchie, and Madonna is the main catres. The film was premiered on October 2002, in USA, and both the critics and the public said the film was quite bad. Although Madonna has a great popularity in America, the film only made 600.000$ in that country; and Sony/Columbia, which had the property rights of the film, decided not to show the film in UK, and cancelled the premiere.
Swept Away is a remake from an italian 1974 film, directed by Lina Wertmüller, which is about a rich woman, who falls in love with a communist sailor, and both arrive to a desert island. It became famous at that moment, but all because its sexual content. Madonna had seen that movie, and she liked it. So they watched it again, after someone told the couple that the BMW ad 'Star' they have filmed, reminded him to that old movie. Ritchie, after watching the movie, said: 'Someone has to do a remake of it'. And Madonna replied: 'Why don't you do it?'. So he answered: 'Why don't you appear on it?'
The filming didn't even have a good beginning. After the 11th of September crisis, the filming took place in Malta and Sardinia (Italy) in September and October, with high security measures. The original title that Guy wanted to give the film (Love, Sex, Drugs & Money) was finally changed to the same as the original movie: Swept Away.
When the film was finished, it was shown to some public to see the reaction, and some scenes had to be cutted, and some other filmed again and changed because they were considered too violent. All this made the film to delay its premiere, intended for July 2002, the to September, and finally to October. The rest of the countries would have to wait until March 2003 to see the film. This delays made the film not to be available to the Cannes festival, as well.
The starring couple are Madonna, who plays Amber Leighton (Guy's mother's maiden name), and italian actor Adriano Giannini (son of Giancarlo Giannini, the actor from the original version)
Dan Cadan (who wrote the funny GHV2 booklet text), a friend of Madonna and Guy, filmed the 'making of' for two weeks. MTV used those images to make its Swept Away MTV Special, a quite funny documentary about the filming of this movie. This is one of the DVD release extras.
Madonna does not sing in this movie, except for a scene in which she starts to dance and sing (quite bad) for the male character, but he dreams with her singing a nice song. This musical scene is the favourite of all the fans, and although this is not Madonna really singing, she dances and makes us have a good time, saving the movie for all those who like Madonna.

cast

Madonna: she has starred in many films, but with no much success. She has appeared in many films as the main actress, but Desperately Seeking Susan and Evita are her best works up to date. She got a Golden Globe for Evita. She has always been criticised for being a bad actress, but she has never given up trying. Her bad work in this movie got a los of bad comments, which she repolied with a funny video message filmed by her husband in thair swimming pool.

Adriano Giannini: Swept Away is his first international movie as the main male character. He had previously worked behind the cameras in: The Talented Mr. Ripley, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Daylight ans Cutthroat Island, and has acted in Italian films as State Zitti Per Favore or Alla Rivoluzione Sulla Due Cavalli.

Swept Away

Amber (Madonna), 40 years old, is a rich, arrogant and attractive woman. She is childish, selfish and superficial, and is used to get everything she wants. The only thing that makes her happy is the money of her husband, boring and passive businessman Tony (Bruce Greenwood).
As he knows that Amber is tires of the typical holidays, he takes her and two more couples; Marina (Jeanne Tripplehorn) and Michael (David Thornton), Todd (Michael Beattie) and Debi (Elizabeth Banks); to a surprise holiday. This is not other thatn a private cruise in the greek islands. Amber complaints about everything: from the size of the private jet, to the company they have. But the private boat she was waiting for turned to be a greek fisherman's boat, with a smelly crew and… no gym! Forced to take part into those holidays, Amber finds a great way of having fun: trying to treat as bad as possible the poor first official: Giuseppe (Adriano Giannini).
He is a young and handsome Italian fisherman, who hates his American clients and all they represent, specially Amber. Amber knows he hates her, and that gives her more strength to make fun of him: she calls him 'Pepe', 'Pipi', 'Guido', she makes fun of his pronunciation, and even more… He can't do anything, as he doesn't want to lose his job, but a little attraction to Amber begins to appear.
Then, one day, after her friend went on a trip, she orders Giuseppe to take her with them, although the weather is really threatening. The small boats breaks down, and they are in the middle of the sea, lost, and hungry. Two days lost, a great storm… and they find themselves stranded in a deserted island.
So know there are no rules, and the usual role of the master and the servant is about to change…
soundtrack
BSO Swept AwayMadonna has not recorded any song for this film, but she has a scene in which she lyp-shyncs a Della Reese song called Come-On-A-My House (one of the best moments of the film). The original soundtrack is composed by Michael Colomber, who has collaborated with Madonna in her most recent works: the albums Music and American Life.
The CD can be bought in any music store, and it has 15 tracks of instrumental songs by Michael Colombier and the song Come-On-A-My-House.
travolti da un insolito destino nell'azzurro mare d'agosto (1974)
Swept Away, Original Film Swept Away is a remake from an italian film directed and griten by por Lina Wertmüller in 1974. In 1975 it arrived to the british screens, and changed its name from Swept Away... by an Unusual Destiny in the Blue Sea of August to just Swept Away.
The story from the original version is not very different from the Guy Ritchie film. The stars are Mariangela Melato (who played the role of Raffaella Pavone Lanzetti, or Amber in the new version) and Giancarlo Giannini (who played Gennarino Carunchio, Guiseppe). As a great curiosity, Giancarlo is the father of Adriano Giannini, and they both played the same role in the same film, but 28 years later. Guy has said that he didn't know anything about this relationship when he chose Adriano to play the role of Guiseppe. Both versions have been also filmed in the same location: Sardinia (Italia).
The old version caused lot of controversy at its time because of the social critic it made, very hard in those years due to the cold war.

Swept Away DVD

The DVD relase of Swept Away in USA, only for region 1, has Guy Ritchie's comments, deleted scenes, an MTV special and the widescreen format.

This list of collectibles is not complete, it's just an orientative guide of the most important things.
the ritchies work together

Swept Away PremiereThis is not the first time that Madonna and Guy work together. Guy had previously directed Madonna in the Star ad for BMW, and the video for What It Feels Like For A Girl (both works got the Guy touch more than Madonna's)
And the came the filming of Swept Away. Someone saw the Star ad and said it reminded him to an old film called Swept Away. Ritchie, after watching the movie, said: 'Someone has to do a remake of it'. And Madonna replied: 'Why don't you do it?'. So he answered: 'Why don't you appear on it?' And this is the beginning of this project. We are sure that none of them thought it was going to be such a waste of time making it, due to all the critics, and Razzie's it got.

in the cinemas
Swept Away has got an horrible result in the cinemas. In its first week in the US is could be seen in just 196 screens, and made just $354,052. The film has been little time in the cinemas, and in November just a few cinemas showed it. In the rest of the countries the reaction has been more or less the same, except for UK, where it didn't get a commercial cinema release: it will be released in DVD-VHS.
the director: guy ritchie

Guy RitchieHe grew up in Fulham (Gales). When he was 6 years ols, his mother, Amber, got married again with baron Sir Michael Leighton. His life changed: he went to live in a XVII century palace. His dyslexia made him very hard to keep studying, so at fifteen, he left everything, moved to London, and worked as a waiter, as a message deliverer,… Finally, at 25 decided that he wanted to be a film director: his father made a couple of calls and Guy directed his first film in 1998: Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels, a film that was a great success in the UK. Snatch was his second movie, and it was an international success. He was just married to Madonna. And from that moment he would direct the Madonna video for What It Feels Like For A Girl, the Star ad for the BMW company, and Swept Away, his last film up to date, and his first movie flop.

madonna is...amber

Amber Lighton Madonna plays Amber, a rich 40 years old, arrogant and attractive woman. She is childish, selfish and superficial, and is used to get everything she wants. The role fits her acting skills perfectly, as Madonna really acts very good in the comedy. Everyone agrees that Madonna is really gorgeous in this movie. She is blond, sun tanned, fit, and very beautiful. The best scene is the moment when she does the playback of Come-On-A-My-House. The costume design has been made by Arianne Phillips, who had previously designed outfits for the What It Feels Like For A Girl video, Star, the Drowned World Tour 2001 and Up For Grabs.
Arianne is a great profesional who has won many Award through her long carreer.
Madonna hasn't earned a single dollar for making this movie.
